Companies importing wheat flour have requested the Government to increase the retail price of imported wheat flour owing to import-related expenses they have to incur, according to Ministry of Trade Secretary Bhadranie Jayawardhana.
Speaking to The Morning, she noted that the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), in response, had informed the companies not to increase the price.
“However, discussions regarding the matter are still underway with the companies,” she said.
The Prima company increased the price of a kilo of wheat flour by Rs. 5.5 effective from 6 September 2019. However, the CAA said that they would take legal action against Prima for increasing the price without the Authority’s approval during that time period.
Presently, the price of a kilo of wheat flour is Rs. 105.
Meanwhile, consumer rights activists Ranjith Withanage and Asela Sampath were unavailable for comment regarding how a price hike would impact bakers and confectioners.
