Who imported substandard oil to Sri Lanka? JVP asks

30 Mar 2021

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today said that the government has failed to provide a source of who imported the unrefined and substandard oil to Sri Lanka. They stated that the officials of the country should find a solution to this problem instead of discussing it and forgetting about it until the next crisis happens. “The consumer does not have the opportunity to check the quality of the product they obtain. The customer obtains the relevant confirmation from the certification body or other responsible agency. "This accountability is seriously questioned from time to time. When a problem arises, the government and officials intervene and make various statements. Investigations, observations and conclusions are discussed in the media. After that process, everything goes into hiding until the next incident happens,” JVP member Sunil Handunneththi said. Meanwhile, JVP member Nalinda Jayatissa brought attention to the fact that due to this situation, a serious problem has arisen for the industrialists who traditionally produce coconut oil, as customers will be suspicious to purchase their products as well. “People need to be told what action the government will take in this regard. The answer is not to re-export as we believe. The country needs to know legally who is responsible for this. How is the government responsible for the process of importing carcinogenic coconut oil to Sri Lanka? What is the course of action to prevent such a situation in the future?” he said.
