Wijeyadasa and Sabry preparing to face UNHRC session

11 Aug 2022

Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe PC had met Foreign Minister M.U.M. Ali Sabry PC to discuss the progress of institutions working on human rights, reconciliation, and reforms, ahead of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session next month.  A statement by the Ministry of Justice, Prisons Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms on Wednesday (10) said that the discussion took place on Tuesday (9), in preparation of the report for the 51st Session of the UNHRC, scheduled to commence on 13 September 2022.  A number of related institutions had participated in the said discussion, along with Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam PC.  In March 2021, the UNHRC recognised that it is vital to preserve and analyse evidence of human rights violations in Sri Lanka in order to promote accountability. This was done through Resolution 46/1, which garnered 22 votes in favour of it and 11 votes against it, and was tabled by the Core Group on Sri Lanka at the UNHRC, comprising Canada, Germany, North Macedonia, Malawi, Montenegro, and the UK.  In her written update earlier this year, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (HCHR) Michelle Bachelet called upon the UNHRC and its Member States to co-operate with the office of the UNHRC in its discharge of accountability-related work under Resolution 46/1, and to provide it with the adequate human and financial resources in order to enable it to effectively deliver the full mandate given under the Resolution. Bachelet is due to give a comprehensive report with options about furthering accountability at the upcoming session in September. Following the attack on peaceful protestors at the “GotaGoGama” protest site at the Galle Face Green on 9 May by pro-Government supporters, the Core Group on Sri Lanka expressed concern over the “violent attacks”.
