Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has stated that if President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation is not received, it will be considered that the President has vacated office and actions will be taken accordingly.
He made this statement while explaining to the media that as an Acting President has been appointed, the Speaker's office of exploring the legal provisions of the above.
As per what was initially discussed, Rajapaksa was expected to hand in his letter of resignation yesterday.
However, media reports detail that Rajapaksa is awaiting to depart Male for Singapore, where he will then submit his resignation after arrival this evening.
