31 Aug 2020

Minister of Justice Ali Sabry PC has pledged to bring an end to the issue of child marriages. He mentioned this while paying a courtesy call on the Chief Prelates of the Asgiriya and Malwatta Chapters last Saturday (29). All Sri Lankans have a responsibility and a duty to nurture Buddhism according to the Constitution, Sabry pointed out, adding: “We have to guarantee that regardless of race or religion.” During his visit to Asgiriya Chapter Chief Prelate Most Ven. Medagama Dhammananda Thera, the focus of the discussion was on the issue of child marriages. The Minister stated that delegations representing Muslim women have met with him to bring his attention to the issue. Calling on the Deputy Chief Prelates of Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters, Sabry noted that in all societies there are those who hold extremist views. “We are looking at ways to select such individuals and rehabilitate them,” he continued. However, the majority desperately wants to live together as the best Sri Lankans as possible, the Minister of Justice further noted.
