Will liberate people from the idea that Samurdhi is a legacy: State Minister

04 Jul 2021

Shehan Semasinghe, the Samurdhi State Minister, is currently working to liberate the people of the country from the attitude that Samurdhi benefits are a legacy that has been passed down from generation to generation for many years, the Ministry said today (04). Accordingly, a new project called Samurdhi Prosperity Week has been introduced to the people of the country. Under the guidance of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, on the instructions of the Minister of State in charge of the subject, the Ministry of Samurdhi is currently in the process of successfully launching all these projects island wide. "The Samurdhi subsidy is a huge boon for the rural people who are struggling to make a living by wrestling with the harsh land. Although Sri Lanka is an agricultural country, it is not without its communities that are unable to make ends meet three times a day. They never saw a future without Samurdhi benefits. The Samurdhi Department, which planned to liberate the Samurdhi recipients from that attitude, along with the youth leadership listened to free speech and empowered the people suffering from poverty," the Minister said. Its planned projects are currently being implemented in the Anuradhapura District. Accordingly, out of the 71,183 Samurdhi beneficiaries in the Anuradhapura District, action has been taken to empower 13,780 beneficiaries. Out of this, the Samurdhi Department has taken steps to start projects of 3,664 selected beneficiaries. Accordingly, programs such as Organic Fertilizer Production Centers, Sipdora Scholarships, Loans, New Stamps, Production of Produced Villages and Housing are being implemented under the Samurdhi Prosperity Program. Accordingly, the Samurdhi Prosperity Bureau in the Siyambalagaswewa area in Mihintale recently (03) opened a tobacco production village. This village of 25 families can be named as the first of its kind. Known as a district with reservoirs covering an area of over five hundred square kilometers, Anuradhapura District is the district with the highest freshwater aquaculture production in Sri Lanka. Minister of State for Samurdhi Shehan Semasinghe addressing the inaugural function of the Dum Karawala Village. "We are launching 500 manufacturing villages islandwide. All the 500 villages we have selected should be successful projects. I personally looked into it with the intention of making it a success. Our Ministry has allocated nearly Rs. 5 million for this project. The officers made a thorough selection regarding the technical knowledge and the conduct of the training. Our goal here is to strengthen 40,000 families. If you are successful, if you make those revenue streams with dedication, we can be a source of strength to you again in the future. While implementing this on the instructions of the President and the Prime Minister, we want to make all these projects a success," the Ministry further said. Speaking further, the Minister said, "We are currently doing a great deal of work to eradicate poverty through our project. Samurdhi recipients in these programs, which are implemented on the instructions of the Minister of State, are selected by the Samurdhi Officer in your area. It is the beneficiaries who have the potential to make this a success. Therefore, I urge all Samurdhi recipients to be a force for that success."
