Will not allow sports to be politicized: Minister

Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa emphasized in Parliament that sports will not be allowed to be politicized at all. The Minister was responding to an oral question raised by Parliamentarian Thushara Indunil. The Minister of Sports pointed out that although he had proposed to set up interim committees, he did not agree to it for this reason and that he would not interfere in an active court decision. The Minister of Sports stated that his aim is to make Sri Lanka the sports hub of South Asia in the future and to create a sports economy in the country and that he invites the opening of branches of the International Cricket Council and the World Football Federation in Sri Lanka. The Minister was responding to a question raised by Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella regarding the establishment of an office of the International Cricket Council in Sri Lanka to look into corruption and irregularities in Sri Lankan cricket. Speaking further the Minister said that as a country we have always complied with the rules of international sports. Sri Lanka has extended its full support to the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption Committee, the Sports Minister said. The Minister said that the office was set up not only in Sri Lanka but also in other South Asian countries to look into corruption in cricket. The Minister said that the method of holding official elections should be changed not only in cricket but in all sports and that a committee has been appointed by the Secretary to the Ministry in collaboration with the Attorney General's Department to prepare the Sports Act.
