01 May 2021

In his May Day message to the public, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa appreciated the commitment and efforts of the working people towards achieving socio-economic development even in the face of an unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. He also mentioned that the people should celebrate May Day while being mindful about the ongoing health situation, “Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, International Workers’ Day has to be celebrated without demonstrations and rallies, as it was done last year. I hope that the Sri Lankan working people will celebrate May Day in a new way, in line with health guidelines,” the Prime Minister said. Reminding the working public that International Workers’ Day is a day to show the world the strength and unity of the working masses, the Prime Minister used this opportunity to remind the people that no matter how difficult the situation, the Government has given due respect to the working people, as it is always committed to protecting workers’ rights. Prime Minister Rajapaksha highlighted what a great achievement it was for the Government to be able to pay the promised daily wage of Rs.1,000 for plantation workers which he promised in the 2021 budget. He also stated that workers’ rights have been further protected by updating a number of Labour Acts such as the Employees Provident Fund Act, the Industrial Disputes Act and the Compensation Ordinance for the benefit of the working class. In his final note, the Prime Minister remarked, “I firmly believe that the working masses will work together to uplift the local economy and I appreciate your commitment to work day and night for socio-economic development even in the face of the unprecedented COVID 19 pandemic. I extend my gratitude for your contribution to controlling the pandemic,”
