Writ petition filed against death penalty

A Writ petition was filed at the Court of Appeal by journalist Malinda Seneviratne today seeking an interim order preventing the implementation of the death sentence.

Seneviratne said implementing the death penalty could lead to the violation of human rights.

The Commissioner General of Prisons informed the Court of Appeal that the death penalty will not be carried out over the next seven days.

The petition is to be taken up for hearing on 2nd July.
