Writer, Shakthika Sathkumara who was charged under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act for publishing an alleged religious hate inciting story on his Facebook wall was granted bail by the Kurunegala High Court.
Sathkumara, was arrested on 1 April 2019, for writing a short story and sharing it on his Face book profile. The said fictional story he shared was about life in Buddhist temple, that allegedly hinted at child sexual abuse.
Amnesty International (AI) in July urged the government to release the writer who faces ten years of jail time if charged under the ICCPR Act.
Section 3(1) of ICCPR Act and Art. 291(B) of the Penal Code of Sri Lanka deals with propagating hatred and incitement of racial or religious violence.
