Youth archaeology club formed

05 Jul 2021

  • Using archaeological science to determine history, instead of distorted myths

  • Club to look into research, funding

By Pamodi Waravita The Archaeo – Youth Club was launched under the guidance of the Department of Archaeology last week, in lieu of the 131st National Archaeology Day which falls tomorrow (7). “The Archaeo – Youth Club was initiated as a way of bridging the gap between the public, the new generation, and archaeology. This platform is for people interested in promoting and learning about the correct, scientific methods of using archaeology to determine history, instead of the recent trend towards distorted facts, which are largely based on myths,” said Department of Archaeology Director General Prof. Anura Manathunga at the launch event held on 1 July. The Club would also look at funding for research and analysis opportunities in archaeology, involving youth representing various fields such as geography. While the Club would function independently, the Department would be guiding the youth in this endeavour. “I hope that the youth act as a blessing for us seniors in this field,” added Prof. Manatunga. Shashika Munasinghe has been appointed as the inaugural President of the Club. The Department is also conducting various programmes during the first two weeks of July in order to commemorate the 131st National Archaeology Day. A Facebook page titled Archaeo – Youth is to be launched today (6), on which details about membership and eligibility criteria would be given.
