16 Oct 2021

  • More legal action this week
By Asiri Fernando Twelve engineers filed a fundamental rights (FR) petition before the Supreme Court (SC) last Friday (15) against the controversial energy agreement on the Yugadanavi Power Station and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply the Government entered into with US energy giant New Fortress Energy Inc., The Sunday Morning learnt. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Union (CEBEU) President Saumya Kumarawadu said that the 12 engineers from the CEB had lodged the petition as citizens affected by the agreement. Several other parties also plan to file legal action against the controversial agreement this week. The agreement was criticised by government and Opposition parliamentarians, with both the Minister of Energy and Opposition Leader calling on the Government to review the decision, citing national energy security risks and negative messaging to investors keen on local petroleum exploration. Responding to a query, Dharmayathanaya Chief Incumbent Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera told The Sunday Morning that he plans to file a FR petition before the Supreme Court this week. “I want to file the FR next (this) week. I have the support of the Cardinal in this matter. There are others that will join us,” Ven. Gunawansa Thera said.
