Quoting from an article published by the American Department of Justice, dated 18th February 2020, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Eran Wickramaratne read out the offence committed by Imaad Shah Zuberi at a press conference recently. Zuberi who faced several felony charges related to his work as a foreign agent, including cheating the Sri Lankan government out of millions of dollars promising to rebuild the country’s image in the United States following the end of the war. “Who paid Zuberi? He was promised 8.5 million US dollars, and has already received 6.5 million USD. These funds were paid during the term of the previous CBSL governor, Ajith Nivard Cabraal,” questioned Wickramaratne. Wickramaratne further mentions that such funds should only be handled by the State, whereas they have been sent directly from the Central Bank, concluding that to date there, has not been a single investigation to the matter. The Yahapalana government exposed Zuberi’s involvement in the high profile Sri Lanka project, but an investigation was not conducted. Zuberi is currently serving a 12 year prison sentence in the US, along with $ 15,705,080 in restitution and a criminal fine of $1.75 million.
