10 Jan 2022

The Ministry of Tourism stated that 17,400 tourists have arrived in Sri Lanka during the first six days of 2022.  In comparison to the arrival reported in January 2021, it is an increase of 90.3%, with 1,682 tourist arrivals.  Among the aforesaid 17,400, the majority of tourists have come to the country from the Russian Federation – 3,106 tourists; this number was followed by 2,930 tourists from India. In addition, 1,761 tourists from Ukraine have arrived, 1,159 from the UK, and 1,110 from Germany. Accordingly, the above-mentioned countries were recorded as the countries that brought in more than 1,000 tourists in the last six days.  Speaking to The Morning earlier this month, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) said that Sri Lanka witnessed around 90,000 tourist arrivals into the country in December 2021.  It was reported as the highest number of arrivals recorded in a month in 2021, while a total of 194,495 tourists visited the island last year. The country was kept open for tourism despite the first Omicron variant-infected individual being identified early in December last year, who was a returnee from South Africa.
