28 tourist service centres to be established

Tourist service centres are to be established along the road network connecting the major tourist cities of the country, and under the first phase of this programme, 28 tourist service centres will be constructed in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Badulla, and Kegalle Districts, said Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga. The Minister said that these tourist service centres, which are equipped with all the facilities required by local and foreign tourists, will be set up in accordance with international standards, and will be implemented in accordance with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s national policy statement. A discussion on this project was held recently via videoconference, with the participation of top officials of the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Urban Development, Tourism Development Authority, and Urban Development Authority. Officials of the Ministry of Urban Development stated that it is planned to construct 11 centres in the Nuwara Eliya District, three centres in the Kandy District, 12 centres in the Badulla District, and two centres in the Kegalle District. They pointed out that these centres would be built from Kitulgala to Nuwara Eliya (via Ginigath Hena), Gampola to Nuwara Eliya (via Pussellawa), Nuwara Eliya to Bandarawela (via Welimada), and Nuwara Eliya to Bandarawela and Ella (via Diyatalawa). Minister Prasanna Ranatunga pointed out the need to comply with international standards for the construction of these service centres with all the facilities required by tourists, such as sanitary facilities, restaurants, and money transfer centres.
