3-wheeler drivers call for frontal display of fares

10 Nov 2022

BY Buwanajee Coralage Three-wheeler fares should be clearly displayed on the front of the three-wheelers so as to inform the passengers, said All-Ceylon Three-Wheeler Drivers’ Association President Lalith Dharmasekara. “To regulate the industry, it should be mandatory for three-wheelers to display their rates clearly on the front so that the passengers can see before accepting rides. Just as the taxi meters were made compulsory through a Gazette in 2017, the same policy should be applied in relation to the rates at present in order to maintain fair and constant rates for the passengers. Accordingly, the three-wheelers should at least clearly display their rates for the first kilometre and the constant rate per kilometre afterwards, just as they used to display the presence of a meter earlier,” said Dharmasekara while speaking to The Morning on Tuesday (8). He relayed their contentment with the current fuel distribution through the fuel app dedicated for commercially operated three-wheelers. Though he spoke of the presence of certain technical difficulties when registering to the system, he mentioned that this is a “good start”. When questioned on the adequacy of the now updated fuel quota of 10 litres for weekly operations, he stated that though it is not entirely satisfactory, the progress on the system is much appreciated and requested the Government to intervene in the aforementioned matter of displaying the three-wheeler rates on the front, so as to be visible to the passengers.
