473 sea creatures dead following X-Press Pearl tragedy

The Attorney General’s Department has tallied the total number of sea creatures which have washed ashore following the X-Press Pearl disaster. To date, 473 sea creatures have been found dead on Sri Lankan shores. The breakdown is as follows: Turtles - 417 Dolphins - 48 Whales - 08 Accordingly, the Attorney General’s Department briefed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (30) on the death tolls. The revelation was made by Deputy Solicitor General Madhawa Tennakoon, who appeared on behalf of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), when the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochani Abeywickreme earlier today. The state prosecutor told the court that the relevant data was provided by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. All carcasses will be referred to the Government Analyst and the Veterinary Research Institute for further investigations. Water samples obtained from the immediate vicinity of the have also been submitted to the Government Analyst. Findings suggested that water samples contained petroleum constituents, as revealed by the deputy state prosecutor.
