A total of 50 Ayruvedic hospitals will be converted into intermediary treatment centres from Friday (28) onwards, in order to add 3,500 beds to the existing Covid-19 treatment capacity in the country.
Speaking to The Morning yesterday (23), State Ministry of Indegenous Medicine Promotion, Rural and Ayurvedic Hospitals Development, and Community Health Secretary Kumari Weerasekara said that this would commence with the Nawinna Ayurveda Research Institute.
“The staff at the Nawinna Ayurveda Research Institute have been vaccinated and they will most likely start treatment of Covid-19 patients from Friday,” added Weerasekera.
In a statement to the press yesterday, the Ministry of Health stated that it had been decided that 50 Ayurvedic hospitals will be converted to intermediary treatment centres to help with treatment for those who contract the Covid-19 virus. This decision was made following instructions by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and at a meeting headed by the subject minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi. It had also been decided to give the necessary training and equipment to the Ayurvedic health staff and hospitals.
With an increasing number of patients, the country is facing a severe need for beds for Covid-19 treatment. State Minister for Primary Healthcare, Epidemics, and Covid disease control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle first granted permission for the Ayurveda General Hospital Rajagiriya and Ayurvedic hospital in Nawinna, Maharagama to treat Covid-19 patients at the beginning of this month. At the time, the State Ministry of Indegenous Medicine Promotion, Rural and Ayurvedic Hospitals Development, and Community Health Secretary Kumari Weerasekara told The Morning that the treatments would focus solely on immunity.
