62,000 acres of forests have not been destroyed: Wildlife and Forest Conservation Ministry
Secretary to the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation Somaratne Vidanapathirana stated that he, as the Secretary, declares that there is no destruction of 62,000 acres of forest and that wildlife officials are working in a very safe manner in this regard.
He was speaking at a media briefing organized by the Ministry of Mass Media and Information yesterday (08) at the Media Center of the Government Information Department.
It has been reported that in some small areas people have entered forests illegally to carry out illegal activities, which is a common situation. People regularly enter forests for agricultural activities, chopping firewood, obtaining honey and so on. The Secretary said that the Wildlife Department has taken steps to enforce the law on such persons in case they become uncontrollable.
