The Ministry of Education has decided to resume academic activities in grades 10, 11, 12, and 13 in all schools islandwide from 8 November.

The Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena stated that in addition, it is planned to commence academic activities in grades 6, 7, 8, and 9 as soon as the health authorities’ recommendation is given. In addition, he said, there was a focus on developing a programme to cover curricula that could not be covered during the school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

“It is very important to manage the existing time frame and cover the curricula, so that we can achieve the target of holding the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (A/L) and Grade Five Scholarship examinations in the first quarter of 2022,” he said.

Meanwhile, the teachers’ trade unions that are currently engaged in several trade union actions demanding the Government to resolve the teacher-principal salary anomaly issue, have stated that they hope to commence teaching activities for the grades 10, 11, 12, and 13 from 8 November.

Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) President Priyantha Fernando said: “Considering the adverse impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on students, we have decided to report back to work. However, online teaching for the students who have not yet been called back to schools, are not being carried out.”

State Minister of Education Reforms, Open Universities, and Distance Learning Promotion Susil Premajayantha recently said that schools were expected to reopen in four stages as soon as possible, subject to Covid-19-related health guidelines as the number of daily Covid-19 infections and deaths is declining significantly these days.
