The first meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers convened under the patronage of Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe was held on Friday (15) at the auditorium of a State-owned institution in Colombo, it is learnt.
A senior Government source told The Sunday Morning that the Cabinet meeting had to be convened at a State-owned institution since the usual venues where the meetings were held were being held by protestors.
Cabinet meetings are usually held at the Presidential Secretariat or the President’s House, and on a few occasions at Temple Trees. However, all three venues were taken over by protestors on 9 July.
Therefore, the special Cabinet meeting on Friday was held at the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA) situated at Malalasekera Mawatha, Colombo 7.
Senior officers of the defence establishment had also attended the meeting to brief the Cabinet on the security situation in the country and the measures taken to curb violence.
Meanwhile, protestors who occupied the key State buildings vacated them on Thursday (14) afternoon after Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation.
Authorities are currently in the process of clearing these buildings and assessing the damages caused to the properties during the protests.
