Activities to do with friends in this Covid era

By Mahika Panditha

It has been said time and time again that the threat of the pandemic is not yet eliminated, and it is still very important for us to remain safe and cautious during this time. We in Sri Lanka are very fortunate to have so many amazing health workers and safety measures being taken along with an 88% recovery rate for Covid-19, but that should not be taken advantage of. Of course, most of you must have been enjoying your school vacation. I sure know that I am just waiting for my exams to be done so I can sleep in (mostly)!

With that being said, as our little island lifted the two-month-long lockdown and curfew, you can now see your friends and family if you have not (with the exception of social distancing and wearing a mask). Thankfully, we are also allowed to travel again to some parts of our country and again, it will only be done with safety measures in place. Even though life has not resumed as it once was, we all must work together to get through this new normal.

Here are a few things you can do with your friends and family in the Covid era whilst still being safe!

  1. A meal with friends

Some of our favourite cafes right here in Colombo are now open for dine-in! As everyone – including both customers and staff – needs to ensure their safety, it would be ideal that you go in pairs or a small group of four to five people to a café for a cute lunch. Personally, I have been going to Plus Nine Four consistently just for their prawn nasi goreng. I literally cannot get enough. It is highly recommended! Some of the other beautiful cafes and restaurants that are open for dine-in upon reservation include Café Kumbuk, Barefoot Garden Café, Dolce Italia, Roccos, Black Cat, Caramel Pumpkin, KIKU, and PST Trattoria. These are just some of my personal favourites.

  1. Take a small trip

I am waiting for a free day to go to the beach guys. I mean, it is so hot these days. A dip in the ocean would be absolutely perfect right now or even just a road trip with my friends.  Speaking of which, have you seen the amazing deals some of our beautiful hotels have going on right now? One of the most beautiful places I have come across – and I am in the process of discussing a trip there soon – is Anantaya Resorts and Spas in Pasikuda! They do have a location in Chilaw too and they have one of the best deals out there. It is a gorgeous place and I cannot wait. Their deal actually goes on all the way till December, so do check it out.

  1. Have a few friends over

Alright, please bear in mind that even if you are having friends over to make sure you are adhering to the safety regulations in your own homes or your friends’ homes as you, your friends, and the families need to stay safe. Even though some places are not open just yet for you to go out and have a good time, you can always have a cute little thing right in the comfort of your home! Invite some friends over and cook together, or maybe even watch a movie. I recently had a game night with some of my friends and also found out that I am absolutely terrible at Monopoly, but the point is to enjoy the time you have with your loved ones.

  1. Have a barbecue

This is similar to having your friends over, but I genuinely do think that when you have good food, your mood is just instantly lifted. Personally, I feel like barbecues are just a vibe. You can have a few friends or family over, pop some lemonade in the fridge, put on some good music, and just have a good time. This also gives you a great reason to just stuff your face with some good food…haha! If you have any leftovers, you can also drop some off at other friends’ houses or even at your neighbour’s. Just make sure you are being safe and healthy!
