AG meets Forest Conservator on deforestation

A meeting was held yesterday (6) with Attorney General (AG) President’s Counsel Dappula De Livera and senior officers of the Department of Forest Conservation (DFC), including the Conservator General of Forests, after the former had summoned them to obtain information on media reports of deforestation that were circulated recently, and to provide necessary instructions.

DFC sources told The Morning that the AG’s Department would release a statement on the outcomes of the meeting.

Attempts to contact the Co-ordinating Officer to the AG, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne, regarding the outcomes of the meeting proved futile.

Various reports of deforestation taking place within the country, including reports of such taking place in the Sinharaja Rainforest were reported by the media recently. These reports followed statements made by politicians that the reports were inaccurate. Since the beginning of the year, environmentalists have raised concerns about an increase in deforestation in the country.
