All Opposition except JVP unite over PC polls delay

The Parliamentary Opposition sans the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People’s Power (NPP) has joined forces against the Government’s postponement of the Provincial Council (PC) elections. Towards this end, members of the Parliamentary Opposition, including Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Chairman, “independent” MP and former President Maithripala Sirisena, Tamil National Alliance Spokesman and M.A. Sumanthiran (PC), “independent” MPs Dr. Nalaka Godahewa, Prof. Charitha Herath, and Prof. G.L. Peiris (Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Chairman), Dullas Alahapperuma, Udaya Gammanpila (Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader), Vasudeva Nanayakkara (Democratic Left Front Leader), Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, and Prof. Tissa Vitarana of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Patali Champika Ranawaka (43rd Brigade Leader), the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) Dr. Harsha de Silva, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, and Kumara Welgama (New Lanka Freedom Party member), and former MPs Faiszer Musthapha (PC) and Thilinga Sumathipala, attended a meeting held at the Grand Monarch in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte on Wednesday (12).    The meeting was held to protest against the attempts made and plans drawn up by the Government to postpone the PC polls. Presently, the terms of the nine PCs have lapsed and the administration of its affairs and operations are being overseen by the Provincial Governors and attached staff, and not by elected representatives.
