All prisons close doors to visitors

08 Jul 2020

A decision has been taken not to allow visitors to all prisons in the country. The decision has been taken after an inmate at the Welikada Prison tested positive for the coronavirus yesterday. Welikada Prison visits were banned yesterday after the patient was discovered. With the lockdown announced on 17 March and curfew imposed, the Department of Prisons shut its doors for visitors. However, last week it announced it had granted permission to allow prison inmates to have one visitor per week. Prior to the pandemic, inmates were allowed to have visitors on a daily basis, limited to one visit per day from a maximum of two persons, with visiting allowed from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., except for Sundays and public holidays.
