Anika and Luca win Colombo C’ship main titles

Photo Ishan Wanniarachchi[/caption] The 105th Colombo Championship Grade-1 tennis tournament 2020 that continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Playing Section clay courts in Colombo saw Anika Seneviratne of Ladies’ College, Colombo and Luca Knese clinch the coveted women’s and men’s open singles titles respectively over the weekend. Seneviratne beat Savini Jayasuriya 7/5, 3/6, 6/3 on Saturday (13) while Knese beat Vibuda Wijebandara yesterday (14) afternoon to a score of 6/3, 2/6, (retired). This was the second time Seneviratne, the reigning Sri Lanka women’s tennis champion, won the women’s singles title at the Colombo Championship. She on Sunday partnered younger sister Alana Seneviratne to beat Janali Manamperi and Jayasuriya 6/3, 6/0 to clinch the women’s double title too. Meanwhile, Wijebandara partnered Savith Weerasinghe to win the men’s doubles title on Saturday beating Thehan Wijemanne and Chathurya Nilaweera in the event’s final 6/7 (7/1), 6/4, 10/7. Results of junior events * In girls’ U-12 singles final, Arushi Thomas beat Brinda Fernando 6/2, 6/1 * In boys’ U-14 singles final, Vichinthya Nilaweera of Stafford International School, Colombo, beat Ransath Peiris 6/1, 6/1 * In the corresponding girls’ U-14 final, Dinra de Silva of St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo, beat Vishmi Serasinghe 7/5, 7/6 (7/2) * In girls’ U-16 singles final, Ruvi Lewkebandara of Gateway College, Colombo, beat Hasali Gajaba 6/3, 6/4 * In boys’ doubles final of U-18 age group, Thehan Wijemanne (Royal College, Colombo) and Chathurya Nilaweera (Stafford International School, Colombo) beat Luca Knese and Kavisha Rathnayake 6/2, 6/1.
