30 Sep 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake    Social media activists are set to bring about a strategic change to the new phase of the “aragalaya” (the people’s struggle), which is to commence from mid-October. Speaking to The Morning, social media activist Dilan Senanayake said that the new stage of the “aragalaya” would start after 15 October, and that at the moment, various segments of the movement are working towards one goal. “The Government doesn't care about the young generation of this country. We could see that most of them are unable to take up their education and move towards the job market. But without education, how can you reach a proper job market?” He also said that politics and party politics are two different things where the youth should participate in political activities, not party policies. “As social media activists, we urge everyone to learn and have a goal for oneself. Social media is not only for fun and games, as a lot can be done with it,“ Senanayake said. He also claimed that the Government wants to create a generation that does not believe in elections or politics so that it could create its own environment with its own agendas. Senanayake claims that Government supporters are trying to destroy the image and credibility of the “aragalaya” through rumours such as those of protestors receiving Rs. 45 million from a foreign source, while condemning the points made by social media activists within the “aragalaya”. “We have no involvement in such an incident, However, we would take legal action against the media publications that reported this issue partially. Even then, there are some people who still blame us.” However, YouTuber Rathidu Suramya Senarathna, also known as “Ratta”, speaking to The Morning, said that they are certain about the Government’s involvement in damaging their reputation by way of character assassination. Meanwhile, social media activist Avishka Viraj Konara, also speaking to The Morning, said that he has no involvement in this issue.
