The Governor of the Southern Province Dr. Willy Gamage has reportedly handed over his letter of resignation to the President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake yesterday (21) effective 2 May 2024, it is learnt.
Gamage who is a close companion of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa have held several positions under the Rajapaksa Governments, before being appointed as the Governor of the Southern Province. He served as the Secretary to the Ministry of State Resources and Enterprise Development during Mahinda Rajapaksa Government. He was appointed as a Governor in 2019 by then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa following the Presidential Election. Following the ouster of Rajapaksa Government in 2022, Gamage resigned from the position and was reappointed by President Ranil Wickremasinghe.
