World Suicide Prevention Week is observed from 10-16 September: Creating hope through social media

It is unfortunately true that many of us have been touched by suicide in one way or another. Whether through a personal connection or hearing about it on the news, suicide is a prevalent issue that affects communities worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 700,000 people die by suicide annually. It is a sobering reminder of the importance of promoting mental health, offering support, and working together to prevent this tragic loss of life.

Suicide is a global public health crisis that affects millions of individuals and their communities every year. In response to this pressing issue, World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) was established with a mission to create hope through action. From 2021 to 2023, the theme for WSPD is “Creating Hope Through Action,” urging everyone to play a part in suicide prevention.

Before discussing how individuals can contribute, it’s vital to understand the severity of the suicide crisis. The statistics are concerning, emphasising the urgent nature of the issue. Each suicide doesn’t only impact one life; it creates a ripple effect of pain and sorrow among those left behind. Recognising this fact is essential to realising the significance of taking action.


Creating hope through social media

In today’s digital world, social media has become a powerful tool for spreading awareness, support, and hope. Now, more than ever, we have the opportunity to create hope through action via our online platforms. We must recognise that our actions on social media can impact lives, offering a ray of hope to those who are struggling. It all begins with simple acts of compassion, like actively listening without judgement to friends, family, or online acquaintances who may be facing difficult times. Demonstrating genuine care for their feelings and concerns can make a significant difference, even through the digital divide.

Moreover, we should actively reach out when we suspect someone might be going through a tough time. Sending a kind message, making a virtual call, or engaging in an online conversation can be a lifeline for someone in crisis. Equally important is educating ourselves about the signs of suicidal thoughts and mental health issues so that we can offer more effective help within our online communities.

Breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness remains a crucial endeavour. By initiating open conversations about mental health on social media, we create a safe environment where people feel comfortable seeking assistance when they need it. Social media can be a platform to share stories of hope, provide information about available resources, and educate others on how to offer assistance. The power of our collective voices can make a real difference in changing attitudes and behaviours related to mental health.


Social media responsibility

Promoting suicide awareness on social media comes with a great responsibility. To maximise the positive impact, it’s essential to approach this responsibility with sensitivity and awareness of the potential consequences. Consider the following dos and don’ts to keep in mind when using social media for suicide awareness:

Dos:

Share valuable resources: Promote credible hotlines and helplines that provide support to individuals in crisis. Access to these resources can be lifesaving in the digital realm

Inspire hope and recovery: Share stories of individuals who have overcome suicidal thoughts or mental health challenges. Personal anecdotes can provide much needed hope and inspiration

Educate and inform: Raise awareness about suicide, its warning signs, and risk factors. This helps reduce stigma and encourages early intervention, potentially saving lives

Use trigger warnings: When discussing sensitive suicide related topics, use trigger warnings to allow individuals to choose whether or not to engage with potentially distressing content, respecting their emotional wellbeing

Promote self-care and mental health practices: Encourage strategies for stress management, coping, and seeking professional help when needed. Such information can contribute to better mental health outcomes


Don’ts:

Avoid graphic or explicit content: Refrain from sharing graphic or explicit content related to suicide. Such content can be highly triggering and harmful to vulnerable individuals

Verify information: Do not spread unverified or sensationalised information about suicides. Rely on credible sources to avoid perpetuating myths and causing panic

Avoid blame and judgment: Refrain from blaming or passing judgment on individuals who have died by suicide or those struggling with suicidal thoughts. Stigmatising mental health issues should be avoided

Don’t glorify or romanticise suicide: Avoid sharing stories that sensationalise or romanticise self-harm or suicide, as it can inadvertently encourage copycat behaviour

Respect privacy and boundaries: Always respect the privacy and boundaries of individuals sharing their experiences online. Create a safe and supportive environment that doesn’t pressure anyone to disclose personal information
