An interim report proposing amendments to regulations governing prisons, including rules relating to the imprisonment of Buddhist monks and other religious clergy, has been handed over to Secretary to the President Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.
The report was submitted today(14) by a special committee chaired by Prince Senadheera, Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.
The committee was appointed following discussions between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and representatives of the three Buddhist Nikayas on 8 October. It was tasked with proposing amendments to prison regulations and standing orders within two weeks.
