The death of 25-year-old Nagarasa Alex in police custody in Jaffna has sparked outrage and raised concerns about police brutality.

Alex, a Jaffna resident, reportedly succumbed to injuries allegedly received during police custody, as evidenced by a harrowing video circulating on social media capturing the young man's account of brutality.

Remanded by the Jaffna Magistrate's Court (MC), Alex passed away at Jaffna Teaching Hospital on Sunday (19).

A post-mortem examination revealed multiple injuries, with the cause of death form citing "Abrasions and Contusions" on the body, upper limbs, and both lower legs.

Relatives claim Alex was called for questioning by the local police, prompting concerns for his safety.

When Alex didn't return home, families sought answers from the police, receiving no satisfactory response.

Allegedly, the police threatened Alex, leading to a complaint filed with the Jaffna regional office of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL).

While in detention, Alex's health deteriorated, resulting in his admission to Jaffna Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A police team, led by the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jaffna, has been tasked with investigating the allegations of police involvement in his death.
