Sri Lankan marine biologist Dr. Asha de Vos’s portrait was prominently displayed on the silver screen at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, commemorating International Women’s Day and the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70).

The photograph, taken by photographer Bre Hartman, was part of the UN General Assembly President’s campaign honouring women who have shattered glass ceilings against all odds.

Accompanying her image was Dr. de Vos’s empowering message: “They told me I was not capable so I made a discovery that changed the world.” She emphasised that her words serve as a reminder to women everywhere that perseverance and courage can lead to groundbreaking achievements, inspiring others to challenge limitations.

Reacting to this proud moment for Sri Lanka, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra expressed his congratulations to Dr. de Vos and UN Women Sri Lanka.

In a statement shared on ‘X’, he highlighted the importance of empowering women to challenge barriers and play a vital role in shaping the future of science and humanity.
