Over 50,000 families in Colombo live in the areas that have been declared as isolated areas, Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake said.
She said this amount was one third of the families living in the municipality.
“The majority of them have no source of stable income and can't even go out to purchase essential items. A 65 per cent of citizens in Colombo are low-income earners. Therefore, I request the government to provide the people in isolated areas with an allowance of Rs.5,000 as soon as possible. The municipal council has already provided all the facilities that it can provide to the affected people," Mayor Senanayake said yesterday.
