20 days old infant dies from COVID-19 pneumonia; youngest COVID related death in SL

A 20 days old infant from Modara who tested positive for COVID-19 passed away at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital this afternoon from the virus and pneumonia, recording the youngest COVID related death in the country, Hospital Director Dr. G. Wijesuriya said. He said the infant was admitted at 4 am today with severe illnesses. “Upon examination, it was found the infant was suffering from respiratory complications and was admitted to the ICU for further treatment. We did a PCR test on the infant, which was positive for COVID-19. The infant died from pneumonia at around 4 pm,” Dr. Wijesuriya said. He requested all parents and guardians of the children and the elderly to visit the hospital immediately if any of them become sick.
