  • TELO, PLOTE to stay on

  • No date for postponed TNA-President meeting

By Dinitha Rathnayake   The Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) and the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) will not break ranks with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), The Morning learnt. According to TNA sources, two constituents of the TNA, the PLOTE, and TELO had issues with the time afforded to them to speak in the Parliament, as the time allotted for the TNA was mostly used up by other MPs from the constituent Parties of the TNA, and not the four MPs of the PLOTE and the TELO. It is also learnt that the TNA Parliamentary group will meet and discuss the progress on accountability issues, the Constitutional reforms process, and strengthening the Party, on 6 July during the Party’s committee meeting. Since the Government has decided that it will take 60% of the time available to speak in Parliament and has given 40% of the time to the Opposition, it seems that all Parties in the Opposition are struggling to allocate time to its MPs, according to sources. Meanwhile, the meeting with the TNA Leader and MP R. Sampanthan and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, which was scheduled on 16 June at the Presidential Secretariat, was cancelled on 15 June evening. The TNA announced the cancellation made by the Presidential Secretariat on its Facebook page. “The Presidential Secretariat informed us a little while ago that the meeting has been postponed and that a new date and time will be notified soon,” it had said. The meeting was to primarily discuss ongoing Constitutional reforms, but it attracted much attention due to the divergent political views of the Government and the TNA. According to TNA sources, a specific date has not been announced yet for the meeting with the President.
