Follows A/L and Grade 5 Scholarship postponement last week
BY Buddhika Samaraweera The General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level (O/L) examination for this year (2021) has been postponed by a month, from January 2022 to February 2022, taking into consideration the current situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris announced yesterday (26). The O/L examination, which was scheduled to be held in January 2022, will now be held from 21 February 2022 to 3 March 2022. However, the results of the O/L examination for the year 2020 have not been released yet due to the fact that the practical examinations for students who sat for the examination that year have not been conducted yet. The relevant practical examinations commenced yesterday, but the teachers’ trade unions announced that about 5,800 teachers and principals who have been attached to such duties have decided to withdraw from them. According to the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), the teachers and principals have decided to withdraw from O/L practical examination duties in protest over the Government’s failure to provide a concrete solution for the teacher-principal salary anomaly issue. Earlier, both the GCE Advanced Level (A/L) and Grade Five Scholarship examinations were postponed by a month to November 2021 considering the current situation. Accordingly, the A/L examination, which was scheduled to be held in October 2021, is to be held from 15 November 2021 to 10 December 2021 while the Grade Five Scholarship examination, which was also scheduled to be held in October 2021, is scheduled to be held on 14 November 2021. However, teachers’ trade unions had claimed that the postponement of the A/L examination scheduled for October 2021 to November 2021 does not provide sufficient time to cover the curricula as schools have been closed for a long time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They have requested the Education Ministry and the other authorities to postpone the A/L examination at least until December 2021 or January 2022.
