Renovated 80 Club opens under the patronage of PM

The renovated 'Eighty Club' (80 Club) at Independence Avenue, Colombo 07 was declared open by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa last night (21). The Prime Minister illuminated the premises and unveiled the plaque symbolizing the official opening. This was made known through a media release from the Prime Minister's office today (22). The 80 Club was named after the Room 80 at the Queen's Hotel, Kandy where the inaugural first meeting was held. The club was later established at the Independence Avenue property. Followed by the 1971 uprising, the government handed over the property to the Sri Lanka Army. In 1978 , the 'Eighty Club' (80 Club) was re-licensed under the government and the Land Reforms Commission maintained the property until it was taken over by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) in November 2020 who then moved to renovate the property. After the comprehensive refurbishment and restoration, the Eighty Club has got a luxurious and stunning finish. This project was implemented on the instructions of the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Urban Development & Housing. The Government plans to further enhance the facilities and provide star class hospitality in parallel to the Waters Edge Hotel, which is also managed by the UDA. Chairman of the UDA Retired Major General Udaya Nanayakkara presented the 80 Club information leaflet to the Prime Minister, whilst The Prime Minister presented a souvenir to the Navy Commodore S.H. Balasuriya to applaud the successful completion of the refurbishment and restoration works by the Sri Lanka Navy. Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando, State Minister of Urban Development Dr. Nalaka Godahewa, Waste Disposal and Community Cleanliness, Hon Governor of the Western Province Roshan Goonetileke, Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development Sirinimal Perera, and Housing, Plnr, and the Director General of the UDA N.P.K.Ranaweera were distinguished guests that were present at the occasion.
