The Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) announced that the temporary ban on motor vehicle imports will be lifted, effective from 1 October.
This decision is part of a broader economic strategy tied to the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The lifting of the ban will take place in stages, starting with the importation of public passenger vehicles, special purpose vehicles, and non-motorized goods commencing on 1 October.
The importation of vehicles used for the transportation of goods will follow, beginning on 1 December.
Lastly, the ban on importing motor vehicles for personal use will be lifted on 1 February 2025.
These temporary restrictions were initially imposed in March 2020 to safeguard Forex reserves during the initial stages of the economic crisis.
