Police stations across the country have been placed on high alert under a nationwide 24-hour security operation aimed at protecting embassies, high commissions and foreign nationals amid the escalating global crisis.
The Inspector General of Police has issued comprehensive instructions to all Police stations island-wide to immediately formulate and implement a specialised security programme covering diplomatic missions, official residences and related institutions. The enhanced security framework will remain in force until further notice, Police Headquarters confirmed.
The move comes in response to concerns that international tensions could trigger incidents affecting national security or public order within Sri Lanka.
Under the directive, Police have been tasked with ensuring round-the-clock protection for foreign nationals residing in or travelling through the country, as well as safeguarding their property and places of residence.
Security coverage has been expanded to include business establishments, tourist hotspots, transit points, residential complexes and religious centres where foreign individuals or communities may be present.
Police said the objective of the operation is to prevent any untoward incidents and to maintain public peace during a period of heightened global uncertainty.
In a further step, the IGP has authorised the mobilisation of support from the Tri-Forces if required to strengthen security arrangements and ensure effective implementation of the measures.
Authorities said the directive is precautionary in nature and is part of a broader strategy to reinforce internal security preparedness as international developments continue to unfold.
With diplomatic missions, expatriate communities and tourist sectors under closer watch, law enforcement agencies have been instructed to remain vigilant and to coordinate closely with relevant institutions to address any emerging threats swiftly.
The nationwide security programme will continue until a review determines that the prevailing risk environment has stabilised.
