Wednesdays declared holidays for tuition classes

17 Mar 2026 | BY Staff Writer

In response to ongoing fuel supply shortages, the Commissioner General of Essential Services, Prabath Chandrakeerthi, has announced that tuition classes will be prohibited on Wednesdays.

This measure follows the government’s earlier decision to declare all Wednesdays as holidays for government schools to conserve fuel.

As part of the new arrangements, Wednesday has been designated as a weekly holiday for government institutions, including courts, schools, and universities.

Essential services such as healthcare, ports, water supply, energy, and customs will continue to operate as usual and are exempt from this holiday restriction.

The government emphasised that these measures aim to manage fuel resources more effectively while ensuring critical services remain unaffected.
