Flood risk warning issued for low-lying areas along Attanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya

The Irrigation Department has warned of a potential flood risk in low-lying areas along the Attanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya valleys following significant rainfall in the upper and middle catchment areas and the release of water through the spill gates of the Basnagoda Reservoir.

According to the Irrigation Department, rising water levels have been observed in the Attanagalu Oya Basin, prompting concerns about possible flooding in vulnerable areas in the coming period.

The areas at risk include low-lying sections of the Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela, Katana and Wattala the Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

The Department said the warning was issued following an analysis of water levels recorded at river gauging stations maintained within the basin.

Residents living in the identified areas have been urged to exercise extreme caution amid the possibility of rising water levels and localised flooding.

Motorists travelling along roads in the affected areas have also been advised to remain vigilant, as flooding could affect road conditions and disrupt travel.

Meanwhile, disaster management authorities have been requested to take the necessary precautionary measures in response to the developing situation.

The general public has been advised to remain alert to official announcements and follow instructions issued by the relevant authorities as rainfall continues to affect the country.
