A four-pronged tussle for the top post at the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) has emerged, with three of its current Vice Presidents being challenged by the head of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL), as nominations for its election of office bearers closed last afternoon.
NOCSL Vice Presidents Shirantha Peiris of the National Shooting Sport Federation of Sri Lanka, Deva Henry of Ski and Snowboard Association, and Asanga Seneviratne of Sri Lanka Baseball are expected to face stiff opposition for the coveted post at the Olympic House from FFSL President Jaswar Umar.
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the election of office bearers for the 2025–’29 four-year term is due to be held at 4 p.m on 25 April, with it being overseen by a three-member election panel headed by retired Supreme Court Justice K.T. Chitrasiri.
The other two members of the panel are President’s Counsel Harsha Amarasekera and Attorney-at-Law Piyasena Ranasinghe.
According to NOCSL sources, objections to the nominations are to be entertained till Friday (17), with the outcome of the inquiries to be announced two days later.
Some 28 accredited national sports associations and federations will be eligible to cast their vote at the upcoming election, with the decision to conduct the election by the end of this month stemming from a written directive issued by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to the NOCSL head.
