Kusal set to rejoin team ahead of England ODIs?

Injured Sri Lanka white-ball cricket Captain Kusal Mendis, who missed the ongoing three-match T20I bilateral series against England, is likely to rejoin the squad ahead of the three-game One-Day-International (ODI) series, according to Team Manager Mahinda Halangoda.

Mendis, a right-handed wicketkeeper-batter, has been dogged by recurring injuries in the recent past and was also forced to miss the two-match Test series against India, which Sri Lanka lost 1-0 last month.

In his absence, left-handed top-order batter Charith Asalanka was handed the reins of the T20I squad for the England series.

When questioned by The Sunday Morning Sports, Halangoda said that Mendis, who had been sidelined due to a leg injury, had recovered, putting him in line to take over the captaincy ahead of the ODI series.

The Sri Lanka Team Manager stated that Mendis, who had featured in a few matches of the domestic T20 first-class circuit, had come through these encounters unscathed on Wednesday (16), but stressed that the batter would still need to pass a medical test to prove his match fitness ahead of emplaning to England.

He added that any decision on the availability of Kusal Mendis for the ODI leg of the England series would largely depend on the outcome of the medical test.

The three-match ODI series between England and Sri Lanka is set to be played from 22 to 27 September, with Chester-le-Street, Durham, Headingley, Leeds, and the Kia Oval in London being the venues.
