- Some tamil nationalist parties to align for cause
- Wiggy happy with Govt. permitting war dead commemoration
Tamil nationalist parties plan to form an alliance to demand official recognition of the Northern and Eastern (N-E) Provinces as Tamil speaking areas, said former Northern Province Chief Minister and Parliamentarian, and incumbent Thamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani leader, President’s Counsel C.V. Wigneswaran.
This despite traditional tamil nationalist political parties being dealt a significant defeat at the recent parliamentary polls by many electorates in the North and the East of the island. The National People's Power (NPP) achieved a victory in the Northern and Eastern Provinces during the Parliamentary General Election held early this month (November), marking a shift in the region's political landscape.
Speaking to The Daily Morning on the future plans of Tamil nationalist political parties, Wigneswaran said that there are ongoing talks about forming an alliance between all political parties which are interested in Tamil nationalism. "This alliance is to be formed to demand the Government to officially recognise the North and the East as Tamil speaking areas."
He also said that they had identified that it is mostly the votes that earlier went to two political groups in the North that had gone for the NPP during the Parliamentary Election. "The supporters who earlier supported two particular politicians have this time supported the NPP. In addition, most of those who got voting rights for the first time have also voted for the NPP for some reason. However, the support for other political parties has not gone down."
While the Tamil political parties are planning on their future course of work, Wigneswaran said that they also commended the positive decisions of the Government such as allowing the Northern people to commemorate their family members who died during the internal conflict. "The Government is doing some good work. Their decision to allow war dead commemorations is one such decision. People, including political parties, are happy about it."
This year’s Parliamentary Election showed a change in voting patterns in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Many voters moved away from traditional Tamil nationalist and regional parties, supporting national Parties like the NPP instead. This shift suggests that people are focusing more on economic and social issues, seeking solutions beyond ethnic politics and regional divides.
Attempts to contact several other politicians representing the North such as President's Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran, Sivagnanam Shritharan, Selvam Adaikalanathan, Dharmalingam Siddharthan and incumbent MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, proved futile.
