The Irrigation Department has issued a critical flood warning for the Attanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya valleys, anticipating a major flood situation in low-lying areas within the next 24 hours due to the recent heavy rainfall.
Areas particularly at risk include Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela, Katana, and Wattala.
The department stated that water levels in the Attanagalu Oya had surged significantly, with increases exceeding six feet in some locations.
“The continuous heavy rainfall, which has reached 150 mm within just 12 hours, has pushed river water levels to dangerous thresholds. We expect flooding in several low-lying areas,” it added.
Residents and drivers in the affected areas are being urged to remain vigilant, as roads are likely to be inundated, leading to disruptions in transportation.
The department emphasised the importance of proactive measures, advising disaster management authorities to implement emergency protocols to protect vulnerable communities and infrastructure.
The affected Grama Niladhari divisions span several districts, with specific areas identified as particularly susceptible to flooding.
In Divulapitiya, divisions such as Dunagaha, Sayakkaramulla, and Batepola are on alert. Mirigama’s divisions, including Pohonnaruwa and Thilinagama, along with Attanagalla’s Athaudakanda and Palamakumbura, have been warned to prepare for potential inundation.
The Gampaha District is also included in the alert, impacting areas like Gonagaha and Aluthgama, while Ja-Ela’s Dandugama and Thudella are under scrutiny. Additionally, divisions in Katana and Mahara have been flagged for possible flooding.
The Irrigation Department also stated that it would continue to monitor the situation closely, reiterating the need for residents in vulnerable areas to be prepared for potential evacuations as conditions may rapidly worsen.
“We are committed to keeping the public informed and will provide updates as new information emerges,” the department stated.
