PM Harini Amarasuriya outlines major reforms to curb university ragging

04 Jun 2025 | BY Staff Writer

Prime Minister (PM) and Minister of Higher Education Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament that no legal cases have been filed over ragging at Sri Lanka’s 17 state universities in the past five years.

She stated that the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) recommendations have been implemented, including a 24/7 hotline and the establishment of Ragging Prevention Task Forces at each state university.

Amarasuriya said a new Victim-Focused support system will offer legal, psychological, medical, and police support, along with rehabilitation and training for authorities on confidentiality.

She noted that ragging has become entrenched beyond first-year students and remains a serious concern within the state university system.
