The Cabinet of Ministers has approved an annual allowance of Rs. 7,500 for teachers serving in registered religious schools across all major faiths in Sri Lanka.
The allowance, which includes a teacher's stipend and a uniform grant, will be implemented starting from 2026.
The move aims to encourage and sustain the voluntary services of religious school teachers who play a vital role in guiding spiritual development and moral education in society.
Teachers at Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Christian, and Catholic institutions will be eligible under the new scheme.
The proposal was presented by the Minister of Buddhasashana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.
