Several political parties have named their candidates for the Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council position.
During the weekend, the main Parliamentary Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya officially announced that Dr. Ruvaiz Haniffa is its candidate for the position. This news comes in a context where about two weeks ago, the ruling party, the National People’s Power, announced that NPP Executive Committee member Vraie Cally Balthazar was the party’s candidate.
Meanwhile, during the weekend, the Sarvajana Balaya alliance announced that its executive board had decided to name Hassan Alaldeen as the alliance’s mayoral candidate.
Attempts to contact Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna to discuss its plans in this regard were not successful, while Sri Lanka Freedom Party member Lasantha Alagiyawanna told The Daily Morning yesterday (23) that the party is looking into the steps that should be taken to finalise its candidate. The United National Party was also not reachable yesterday, although media reports claimed that the party is yet to select its mayoral candidate out of several potential candidates.
Meanwhile, National Consumer’s Front Chairperson Asela Sampath, the party’s mayoral candidate, told The Daily Morning that he will pay attention to informal workers and consumers.
