Sri Lankan cricket is mourning the loss of a beloved icon, as Percy Abeysekera, affectionately known as 'Uncle Percy,' has passed away.
For nearly six decades, Uncle Percy bore witness to the enthralling Cinderella story of Sri Lankan cricket, embodying the enduring passion and remarkable success of the sport.
Born on July 30, 1936, in Boossa, he left an indelible mark on the cricketing world.
Percy Abeysekera's journey began at Richmond College Galle, and in 1979, he initiated a unique form of support as he led the cheerleading with the Lion Flag. His devotion to Sri Lankan cricket earned him a special place in the hearts of fans across the globe.
Though he celebrated his 87th birthday in August of this year (2023), reports indicate that he had been battling health issues recently.
In a touching gesture, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) presented Rs. 5 million to Percy Abeysekera in September to assist with his well-being and health maintenance.
Uncle Percy's legacy as one of the most enduring and passionate supporters of the Sri Lankan cricket team remains etched in the annals of the sport's history.
Since the 1979 World Cup, he proudly unfurled the Sri Lankan flag in unwavering support of his beloved team, leaving an irreplaceable void in the cricketing community.
