Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant when engaging in online purchases following a recent increase in financial fraud linked to digital marketplaces and social media platforms.
According to information received by law enforcement, fraudsters have been using platforms such as Facebook, Ikman, and WhatsApp to advertise mobile phones and other electronic devices at prices significantly lower than prevailing market rates. Victims are lured by the attractive pricing and assurances of limited availability, which are used to create urgency and pressure buyers into making quick decisions.
Investigations indicate that scammers typically request an advance payment, usually ranging between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 20,000, claiming it is required to reserve the item. Once the payment is transferred to the provided bank account, communication is abruptly cut off and the buyer is blocked, leaving no trace of the seller.
Authorities noted that such scams often follow a consistent pattern, exploiting consumer trust and the convenience of online transactions. Fraudsters frequently avoid face-to-face interactions and may refuse video calls, making it difficult for buyers to verify either the product or the seller’s identity.
Members of the public have been strongly advised not to make advance payments for goods purchased online and to avoid transactions where the item cannot be physically inspected and collected. Cash-on-delivery services or direct hand-to-hand exchanges are recommended as safer alternatives.
When meeting unknown sellers, individuals are advised to choose busy, well-lit public places and to avoid attending alone. Buyers are also encouraged to request live video verification to confirm that the seller is in possession of the advertised product.
